You won’t have to worry about floods.
One of the reasons St. Matthews saw such a big influx of people was that it’s set atop high ground. After the “Great Flood of 1937,” residents flocked here to protect themselves from the whims of the weather.
Many young professionals live here.
St. Matthews has a reputation for being “hip.” A number of established, high-income professionals live in local condos, lofts and townhomes. St. Matthews is considered a very tolerant and gay-friendly area. In fact, there are more same-sex couples living here than in 97.2 percent of American neighborhoods.
The food is delicious!
Many Urban Spoon favorites are located near the shops of St. Matthews, including Havana Rumba (Cuban), Café Lou Lou (Cajun), Simply Thai (Asian), and Gasthaus (German). You can grab a microbrew at the Bluegrass Brewing Company, Saints, Dutch’s Tavern, or Gerstle’s Place.

Homes are surprisingly affordable.
Despite the fact that this land is highly coveted, you can still find homes for $140/sq ft or $200,000 here. Although, you will need an experienced Realtor to help you out, since homes generally don’t sit on the market for more than a few months.
You’re close to recreational activities.
Brown Park is a preferred hangout for local residents, with its 28 acres of woodland trails and picnic areas. You can also enjoy the great outdoors at Community, Warwick, or Arthur K. Draught parks. You’re also less than 3 miles from the golf courses at Big Spring, Oxmoor, Louisville, and Hurstborne country clubs.
The St. Matthews community is very walk-able.
Shelbyville Road is a hub of activity. You’re 0.3 miles from the nearest Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market, Walgreens pharmacy, and Big Lots. Running Stores, car dealerships, Starbucks, toy shops, comic stores, electronics retailers, and restaurants are just a few of the places you can walk to from your doorstep. Over the years, this area has become more eclectic and interesting. And if you like to support Mom And Pop stores, there are plenty around for those shoppers who stay away from the Big Box Stores.
