The St Matthews community in Louisville is known for its excellent shopping, with The Mall St. Matthews and Oxmoor Mall and every chain store you can imagine – all conveniently located on Shelbyville Road. You can find over 180 shops between these two malls, from Dick’s Sporting Goods, Brookstone and Aveda to Williams-Sonoma, Old Navy and Pottery Barn Kids.
Once upon a time, the St. Matthews neighborhood was considered a suburb of Louisville, but was annexed as part of the city as recently as 2003. Before that, the area’s growth was expedited by the great flood of 1937, which sent many Louisville residents to higher ground. Not surprisingly, the median home price for this coveted real estate is over $200,000.
The St. Matthews Louisville neighborhood attracts primarily established, high-income individuals, although many young professionals live in local apartments. The greater St. Matthews area is a well-known place to eat once you’ve worked up an appetite shopping. Ethnic delights abound at Havana Rumba (Cuban), Simply Thai (Thai), Café Lou Lou (Cajun), NamNam Café (Vietnamese), Asahi (Japanese) and Gasthaus (German), plus Mojito Tapas (Cuban) isn’t very far away. There are also a few high-quality watering holes nearby, including the Bluegrass Brewing Company, Saints, Gerstle’s Place and Dutch’s Tavern.
St Matthews homes are all very different and unique – from Cape Cod to Traditional styles with spacious floor plans ranging from 1,300 to 3,900 square feet of space. The average price per square foot is $140. Homes don’t last more than a few months on the market here for obvious reasons. This charming area has it all – access to shopping, dining, outdoor parks like Seneca and Brown, and a great stock of high-quality homes.
